I received a devotional Friday morning that really caused me to pause and think about my life in God’s service.  They used the passage from Luke 1 where Gabriel visits Mary and tells her God’s plan for her life.  “‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered.  ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’  Then the angel left her…‘My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has been mindful of the humble state of His servant.  From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is His name.'”  (Lk 1:38, 46-49)

Benefits of Repentance

“But they refused to repent and glorify Him.” – Revelation 16:9
 
Authentic repentance is very fruitful in its follow-through.  When the Holy Spirit arrests my heart and pricks my conscience about my behavior, I want to change.  It may be a bold, loving friend that exposes my bad habit or unacceptable attitude.  If so, will I change?  Indeed, fruitful repentance is not just words of remorse, but a change in the way I have been acting.  It is the removal of my pride; an encounter with my blind spots.

Fear of the Lord

“Who will not fear You, Lord, and bring glory to Your name?  For You alone are holy.” – Revelation 15:4 
 
The fear of the Lord is fundamental to finding wisdom.  Without awe of the Almighty, there is no access to His insight.  Where reverence for His holiness is void, there is lack of understanding in the ways of God.  The first step in acquiring wisdom from almighty God is to fear Him (Proverbs 9:10).  There is a worship of the Lord’s majesty and a dread of His judgment.  Once a healthy fear of the Lord has been embraced, the result is peace and knowledge in submission to, and love for, the Holy One.
