Moms Are Indispensable

For a number of years, I was involved in a local prison ministry. A few times a month, I would help lead a Bible study. I can’t tell you how many times I was told by an inmate that he was at the Bible study because his mother encouraged him to attend. Sadly to say, I can count on one hand how many times that was said about a father. Let me echo the words of Dr. Dobson, “Mom(s), you are indispensable.” God has given you a heart for your kids that is unparalleled.

While there is always an exception, moms have a relentless love for their children that knows no end. Men on average may be stronger physically than most woman. Yet, when it comes to emotional strength and love for their kids, moms totally rule. There are a few guys out there that can bench press 350 lbs. Yet, almost every mom out there can bench over 400 in emotional love pounds when it comes to their kids. If you are a dad like me, this shouldn’t threaten us at all. It should humble us greatly and make us want to be better husbands and fathers.

It is this simple. Over the course of history, moms have shown up for the show. This is not to place all mothers on a pedestal – just most of them.

As a son, I am blessed to know the love of a mother, and as a husband I am blessed to be married to a woman that is an awesome mom as well as an unbelievable wife. I didn’t deserve either one. Then again, most of us don’t deserve the unfailing and unconditional love that a mother pours over our lives.

This Mother’s Day weekend, I want to encourage dads out there to step it up for our mothers and our wives. Whether a married mom or a single mom, they need to know how much we appreciate them.

I must say that mothers were one of God’s greatest creations. If I can do anything right as a father, it will be to share the love of Jesus with my kids and love their mother.
