Relief Efforts for Fiji

Relief Efforts for Fiji

Cyclone Winston hit the islands of Taveuni, Vanua Levu, and Viti Levu. This cyclone was a category 5 hurricane, which is the strongest on record to hit the Fiji Islands with sustained winds up to 185 miles an hour. Three congregations of the Lord’s church were in the direct path of this devastating hurricane: Nabowalu, Buca, and Vatudamu. Nabowalu and Vatudamu are right on the water with many of the brethren’s homes within yards of the water. Please keep these brethren in your prayers!

The middle picture above is the newly established Church of Christ in Nabowalu which was severely damaged during the storm. The electricity and cell phone services are down, so it may be a few days before we can get a detailed report from the local brethren. I have texted and sent e-mails to key people there and will update you as reports come in. Currently, Suva, Fiji’s capital, seems to have escaped the brunt of the storm. But reports from the outlying areas are slow coming in.

Anyone interested in helping, may send donations to the Killen Church of Christ earmarked for Cyclone Winston Relief. This money will be used to put together a container of food, household items, tools, and gardening implements to ship to Fiji. From past experience with these monster storms these are some of the things that will be most needed right now. Recovery is a lengthy process. It will take a minimum of 6 months before their gardens will produce enough food to sustain life.

Again, if you would like to help with the relief effort, please make checks payable to the Killen Church of Christ, earmarked Cyclone Winston Relief. If you have any questions you can call

Thank you for your prayers for the Fiji Brethren,
